Yui Suzuki greets a scoring Matthew Janetzki after Barison's two out double.
Redmond travelled to Mercer Island Monday night in a KingCo 3A league contest. A big 5th inning sparked the Islanders to a 9-4 win over the Mustangs.
Senior right-hander Nick Fazio did all he could to tame the top ranked Mercer Island offense, and did just that for four innings. Holding a 4-4 lead in the 5th, Mercer Island's leadoff hitter lined a single up the middle. A bang bang safe call on a bunt and a swinging bunt would then load the bases with nobody out. After walking in a run, Fazio yielded to junior Dustin Lennon-Jones who would strike out the first hitter he faced. Unfortunately, two pitches later the Mercer Island designated hitter drove the ball over the left-centerfield fence for a grand slam. Though that would be the last run the reliever would allow, the damage was done and MI made the 9-4 lead stand.
The Mustangs had a big hit of their own in the 4th inning off the bat of Connor Barison. The senior hit a two strike, two out double to left-center that scored 3 and gave the Mustangs the lead for a brief time. Junior Yui Suzuki added two hits on the day.
Redmond faces Bellevue in a makeup game on Tuesday. It is a reschedule of last Wednesday's original contest.
