In a playoff showdown between two KingCo 4A rivals, Eastlake landed blows early and then hung on to beat Redmond 5-2 on Thursday.

The loss ended the Mustangs season and their march toward a berth in the state championship tournament for the first time since 2012.

Duncan Warriner again proved to be a workhorse for Redmond. After missing all of last season with an injury, the Mustang starter pitched his fourth complete game of the year, giving up five runs on eight hits while striking out three.

Yui Suzuki and Colin Curry, Redmond’s most consistent hitters, continued to set the table for the rest of the offense. Suzuki was 3 for 4 with a double and Curry went 2 for 3 with an RBI triple.

After the Wolves put up two runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, Redmond answered back with a run in second and another the third to tie the score at 2-2.

But two base hits in the bottom of the third followed by two straight deep sacrifice flies plated two more runs for Eastlake. The Wolves added another run on a sacrifice in the fifth to make it 5-2.

Redmond had its chances, leaving the bases loaded in the second and runners on second and third in the fifth.

The Mustangs finished the season 9-10 in KingCo and 11-10 overall. They’ll look to a core of underclassmen to step up and replace Seniors at key positions including both middle infield spots, center field, and left field.

Tryouts for the 2020 season are a little more than nine months away. Go Stangs!
