Seniors Shine as Redmond Beats Newport 2-1

By Mustang News, 04/30/19, 1:30PM PDT

Spencer Uyematsu brought the fireworks for Redmond’s Senior Night celebration on Friday. His buddy Yui Suzuki lit the fuse.

Uyematsu’s two-run home run with Suzuki aboard in the sixth inning lifted the Mustangs to a 2-1 victory over Newport and secured a spot in the 4A Wes-King District Tournament.

The entire class had a hand in the win.

Landon Thompson and Emily Tsujikawa each pitched a shutout inning in relief and Dustin Lennon-Jones made a leaping, run-saving catch against the wall in the fourth inning.

Right fielder Hugo Aponte and third baseman Michel Tiglon helped lock down Newport on defense, and shortstop Darek Khabani’s strong throw with the bases loaded nipped the runner at first for the final out of the game.

Even Toma Itagaki, who broke his leg during the Green and Gold scrimmage at the start of the year, was a big presence in the dugout and showed how to contribute to a win despite being sidelined all season.

While it was a night for the Seniors to shine, Sophomore Ryan Rembisz showed why the future looks bright for the Mustangs. The Redmond starter had another solid outing, surrendering one run on five hits over five innings, striking out two with no walks.

The Mustangs had just four hits but Uyematsu and Suzuki—friends since Little League—made theirs count in the sixth. Suzuki led off the inning by slicing a first-pitch single to center, and one out later Uyematsu crushed his third home run of the season to give Redmond the lead.

With the victory, the Mustangs finished the regular season at 9-9, and a tiebreaker made Redmond the league’s seventh seed going into the Wes-King tournament.

The Mustangs will play at Eastlake on Thursday in a loser-out game. The teams split their regular season series.
