Stangs Drop a Heartbreaker to Mount Si

By Mustang News, 04/26/19, 10:45AM PDT

Through three innings on Wednesday, it looked like the Mustangs had rediscovered their winning formula: grab an early lead, the starting pitching keeps them in the game, the defense does its job, and the bullpen handles the rest.

True to form, Redmond jumped ahead 3-0 on a Colin Curry home run in the first inning and Duncan Warriner was cruising through three.

Then Mount Si came up with a new gameplan: be aggressive at the plate and on the basepaths. Eight straight Wildcat batters led off the fourth inning with hits or productive outs, including two infield singles.

Mount Si scored four runs and held on for a 4-3 win.

Warriner settled in and didn’t allow a baserunner over the final three innings. He pitched his third straight complete game, allowing four runs on eight hits, striking out two with no walks.

The Mustang hitters, meanwhile, couldn’t bunch together hits against the Mount Si bullpen. Redmond left the tying run in scoring position in the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings.

The loss dropped Redmond to 8-9 and into sixth place in KingCo 4A. The Mustangs will wrap up the regular season tonight with a Senior Night celebration against Newport at Hartman Park. Game time is 6 p.m.
