Mount Si, Errors Saddle Mustangs with 4-3 Loss

By Mustang News, 04/04/19, 1:45PM PDT

The Mustangs had Mount Si right where they wanted them.

Through seven innings of ugly baseball, Redmond had tied the score at 3 with a chance to escape from a chilly Bannerwood Park with an extra-inning, come-from-behind win.

But an eighth-inning rally fizzled and the Wildcats notched a run in their half of the frame to send the Mustangs to another disappointing defeat on Wednesday.

Starter Landon Thompson threw 97 pitches in four innings and left the game with a 2-1 lead. Calvin Cadman relieved him in the fifth and walked four over the next inning and a third, giving up two unearned runs in the sixth after a passed ball and Redmond’s fifth error of the game.

Despite their struggles, the Mustangs kept kicking. Down 3-2 in the seventh, Cadman’s two-out single drove in Matthew Janetski with the tying run. Redmond put runners on second and third in the eighth but could not cash in.

Shane Melrose took the loss, allowing four hits and one run over two and a third innings. It was a gutty performance, literally: a come-backer hit Melrose in the midsection in the eighth, but he found the ball at his feet and recovered to make the out at first.

Redmond is now 4-4. They’ll try to snap a three-game losing streak versus Newport on Friday before lining up against Eastlake, Skyline, and Bothell. The Mustangs beat Skyline and Bothell earlier in the season and hope to duplicate that winning formula next week.
